Personhood and future belief: two arguments for something like Reflection

چکیده

This paper offers two new arguments for a version of Reflection, the principle that says, roughly, that if one knew now what one would believe in the future, one ought to believe it now. The most prominent existing argument for the principle is the coherence-based Dutch Strategy argument advanced by Bas van Fraassen (and others). My two arguments are quite different. The first is a truthbased argument. On the basis of two substantive premises, that people’s beliefs generally get better over time and that being a person requires having knowledge of this fact, it concludes that it is rational to treat your future selves as experts. The second argument is a transcendental one. Being a person requires being able to engage in plans and projects. But these cannot be meaningfully undertaken unless one has Reflection-like expectations about one’s future beliefs. Hence, satisfaction of Reflection is necessary for being a person. Together, the arguments show that satisfaction of Reflection is both rational and necessary for persons.

Against Materialism

Materialism is the idea that human beings are material objects—brains, perhaps, or some part of the brain—without immaterial selves or souls. I give two arguments against materialism. The first is an argument from possibility: it is possible that I should exist when no part of my body exists, in which case I am not identical with my body or any part of my body. The second is an argument from im...

توجیهات جرم‌زدایی از مصرف مواد مخدر آرام؛ مطالعه تطبیقی درحقوق کیفری هلند و ایالات متحده آمریکا

Classification of drugs into two categories named soft and hard has a long history in Netherlands and United States of America. Soft drugs are believed to be non-addictive and less damaging to the health than hard drugs. According to this belief, decriminalization of soft drugs has much of pros. Their arguments for decriminalization may be gathered in two areas: law and health. The pros believe...

A Non-factualist defense of the Reflection principle

Are there plausible synchronic constraints on how a subject thinks of herself extended over time? At first glance, Bas van Fraassen’s principle of Reflection seems to prescribe the sort of epistemic authority one’s future self should be taken by one to have over one’s current epistemic states. (The gist of this principle is that I should now believe what I’m convinced I will believe tomorrow.) ...

On Maternal Obligation: the Lens of Motherhood in the Abortion Debate

In this essay, I will evaluate the arguments put forth on the subject of “maternal obligation,” or those actions that a pregnant mother may (or may not) owe to the de veloping fetus within her body. I will compare those arguments of Margaret Little, who claims that mothers deserve more autonomy in determining maternal obligation based on the principles of stewardship and the norms of creation;...

The failure of theories of personhood.

The belief persists in philosophy, religion, science, and popular culture that some special cognitive property of persons like self-consciousness confers a unique moral standing. However, no set of cognitive properties confers moral standing, and metaphysical personhood is not sufficient for either moral personhood or moral standing. Cognitive theories all fail to capture the depth of commitmen...
